Within the Hudson Valley region of New York State,

The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice has thrived for 13 years and brought many leading artists from the world of Opera and Broadway to perform on their stages. This mainly Opera Festival has modeled itself after the Spoleto Festival, whose founder, Gian-Carlo Menotti, was a close colleague of one of the Phoenicia Festival’s founders, Louis Otey. The Festival often turns the entire town into a Catskill Mountain, entertainment center utilizing the Train Museum, Shandaken Theatrical Society theater as well as the Methodist, Wesleyan and Catholic churches in the town. All found within the Hudson Valley region of N.Y.

A number of incredibly prominent, leading opera artists appear regularly on the Festival stages– John Osborn, Lucas Meachem, Morris Robinson, Lauren Flanigan, Barry Banks, Erin Brooks, Ginger Costa-Jackson, Kyle Albertson, Joyce El-Khoury, Troy Cook, Malcolm McKenzie, Jonathan Tetelman, Rosalind Elias, Susan Powell, Richard White, Ron Raines, Richard Bernstein, Daniel Scofield, Steven White, Richard Leech- these are regulars at opera companies such as the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Paris Opera, La Scala, San Francisco, The Vienna Staatsoper to name but a few.

The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice provides entertainment of the highest caliber on a par with Santa Fe, Glimmerglass or Tanglewood. Attendees have been continuously treated to operas and shows a variety of genres (Broadway, oratorio, barbershop, rock, jazz, throat singing, drama and children’s shows) over the past 12 years. Ulster County and the Hudson Valley as a whole, have presented them with a wide variety of awards including Cultural Business of the Year in Ulster County, YWCA’s of Ulster County Woman of the Year (General Director Maria Todaro) and numerous other cultural awards from the town of Phoenicia to the federal House of Representatives.

The beautiful park in Phoenicia, which is home to the main stage of  The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice, has produced many classical operas- Don Giovanni, Falstaff, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto, Carmen, La Boheme, L’Elisir d’Amore and I Pagliacci as well as Carlisle Floyd’s classic American opera, Of Mice and Men. This amazing outdoor festival has also produced a  number of Broadway musicals including A Little Night Music and Kiss Me Kate. For entertainment in the Catskills, you cannot go wrong with the International Phoenicia Festival of the Voice who will be welcoming two visiting companies this summer, Teatro Grattacielo and historic New York City Opera. Opera, class, leading artists and great entertainment in Phoenicia in Ulster County, Hudson Valley New York- outdoors under the stars- Aug. 5-7.
